School and the Community.

Wise Outlook
3 day course to introduce year 9 girls to Engineering as a career option.
During the three days the girls are involved in an electronics project,
meet female role models working in the industries, visit a company where
they see and meet women engineers at work.
What
the girls say
‘I enjoyed the part when we were making the WISE box (fuse
tester) and the presentations by the girls. It was a great experience!’
‘I came on this course because it sounded fun and interesting.
To use new equipment and do experiments. To learn what engineering is
about. I also wanted to meet new people.’
‘I loved the practical project because it was something I found
interesting and easy to do. I loved it, it was brilliant!’
I enjoyed everything, at first I thought it would be boring, but
it was excellent and it has encouraged me to become an engineer. It was
a good chance to meet new people.
Constructive Experiences
A one-day experience for girls in year 9. Four girls’ schools in
the Bradford Area were brought together at Bradford Girls Grammar School
to celebrate National Construction Week.
During the day the girls worked together to build a Giant Tetrahedron
from pieces of dowel and elastic bands! They met female role models and
became involved in a simulation game called Morrison City where the challenge
is to build a small housing estate, put in roads and services in the most
cost effective way possible. During this exercise they learn about the
different jobs involved in the planning and building of a development.
What the girls said
‘ I
never thought about working in construction but after the activities we
did it looked fun. So I now have a totally different view about it.’
‘I thought I have never heard of any females who do that kind
of job. I found it very surprising to hear women who do that work and
it was very interesting’
‘I enjoyed everything today but especially enjoyed Sarah’s
talk on being a water engineer. I also would like to improve health in
that sense in the future’
‘I would say (to my friends) so that no one should ever tell
them, that construction is men’s work.’
